How I learned English – Bianca Carbogim

Hi everyone! My name is Bianca Carbogim Soares. I’m a biologist and I’m getting my masters in Entomology at ESALQ/USP.

How I learned EnglishWhen Will invited me to write about my experience with the English language, I thought I could start saying how English is wonderful and how it is easy to be learned. However, this is not entirely true.

Yes, English is a very nice language that can help you take new opportunities and make friends, for instance. Nonetheless, to learn and like English, you have to be dedicated and very studious. This was not my example at the beginning. I started to study English when I was 12 at a language school, and since then, I never stopped (I’m 24 now.). I didn’t like English when I was younger; I thought classes were very boring and repetitive. On the other hand, I knew it would be very important to me in the future so I continued studying and now I’m very grateful for having followed this path.

In 2012 I had the opportunity to do an exchange program paid by the Brazilian Government to study abroad. Since I could speak English well, I applied to study at the University of California, in Davis, USA, and I got accepted. Although I have studied English for years, I had some trouble when I arrived in the USA. I couldn’t understand Americans speaking and I was completely lost during the first week, however, I didn’t give up and, with time, I realized I could understand even TV commercials.SAM_2212

During the time I was abroad, English was essential to me. I met people from all around the world and I made very good contacts who can possibly help me in the future. If hadn’t devoted time to study English and if my parents hadn’t supported me, I would never have gotten where I am right now.

As everybody already knows, nowadays, English is not just appreciated for a job opportunity but it is also required and obligatory in the vast majority of time.

I know that maybe some people haven’t had the same opportunities that I had. Maybe you just start studying English at the age of 40. However, the secret to understand and do well in English is to PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE, always. Push yourself and be persistent. You’ll see the rewards of your efforts soon enough.

To cut a long story short, English completely changed my life and I encourage everyone to come out of their comfort zones and face new challenges in the English language. You never know what you will get from learning!
